MPLS/BGP routing question

Isn't this the reason why path protection mechanisms were introduced in 
MPLS ? Shouldn't VPN provisioning also include "fault management" ??
Or is this something that is left to the underlying LSRs.

Perhaps someone on this list can enlighten me ?
